has produced many of the funloving Hobbits that inhabit Middle-earth,
including famous personalities like Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Merry
and Pippin.
In J. R. R. Tolkien's universe of Middle-earth,
Hobbits live in the Shire and are very short ranging from 2
to 4 feet in height. They tend towards stoutness and have slightly
pointed ears. Their feet are furry with leathery soles, so most
Hobbits hardly ever wear shoes. They love food and farming,
enjoy smoking and dislike conflict, (which makes it ironic that
they are a pivitol race in the Lord of the Rings story).
Bilbo Baggins found the One Ring
when he was adventuring and returned to his home, The Shire,
at the end of 'The Hobbit' story. He, reluctantly, gave the
ring to his young cousin Frodo Baggins when
Gandalf realised the rings significance and
the dangers its presence in the Shire would cause. Frodo and
his friends, Sam, Merry and Pippin, set off
to Rivendell to deliver the ring to Elrond.
He later agreed to continue to carry the ring to Mordor and
to attempt to destroy it in Mount Doom, where it was forged
by Sauron.
Gollum was a Hobbit like creature
called Sméagol, who claimed the ring
hundreds of years prior to 'The Hobbit' story (he murdered his
friend who found it fishing) and was corrupted by the Ring into
his current wretched state. He lost the ring while hunting in
the caves and Bilbo stumbled across it. Gollum hunted for the
ring ever since and that finally resulted in his demise.
