The most well-documented of the Istari, Gandalf requires little research when it comes to the necessary colours, all in grey with a grey beard, a big blue wizard's hat and a silver/grey scarf.
Base coating this miniature in grey with a wash of black will give it an almost finished appearance. Experimenting with different levels of highlight for different items of clothing will add interest and the more subtle tones of grey used, the more effective the end result will be. Patience is always rewarded in miniature painting and keeping the paint a good runny consistency will keep the final paint job smooth. Using a light brown washed in black or dark brown may treat equipment, and the belt can be picked out with a light drybrush of off-white, (or silver, if imbued with an adventurous spirit). Gandalf's hat is best washed with a blue/black mix over a solid mid-blue and highlighted, if necessary. What little flesh is on show can be initially painted brick red or a warm brown followed by the usual selection of progressively lighter flesh tones. It won't be particularly lightened as most is in shadow.
