Bard the bowman lived in Laketown and was made famous by shooting down the mighty fire dragon Smaug the Golden. Smaug had begun to burn the town and many had lept into the lake to avoid his fury. Bard stood firm and with the advice of the raven, Roac, saw that Smaug had one small hole in his armour of scales and gold. He fired his lucky arrow into Smaug's black heart and the dragon plunged into the lake and died. Afterwards he was made the ruler of Laketown.
