The great eagles inhabited high and inaccessible places, particularly in the Hithaeglir, during the Third-age. While their dealings with men and Elves were generally slight, at crucial times, they lent their aid to the free peoples of Middle-earth, notably at the battle of the five armies and at Mount Doom during the war of the Ring were they plucked both Frodo and Sam to safety from an otherwise certain fate.
