Saruman was chief of the Istari or order of wizards in Middle-earth. He was also to become head of the White Council which was formed in response to the re-emergence of Sauron in the world. Gradually however, the wizards's love of power led him to to believe that he should find the One Ring for himself, and with its terrible power, challenge the might of Sauron the Maia in open confrontation.

He turned Isengard into a great fortress and recruited Dunlendings and orcs into his service. Even Rohan was seen as another ally for his cause and rich supply of fine cavalry for his army. His plans, however, were to be thwarted; the Rohirrim declared for the free Peoples and they and the Ents put paid to his schemes.
