MC14 - Legolas and Gimli

Legolas
A Sindarin, or Grey elf, Legolas was the son of Thranduil, the Elvenking in Northern Mirkwood. He represented his father at the Council of Elrond and was chosen by the latter to represent the Elder race in the Fellowship. A keen bowman and an excellent tracker, Legolas served the Fellowship well.

A remarkable feature of Legolas was the great freindship which developed between him and Gimli, the Dwarf. Since the murder of King Thingol in Beleriand by the Dwarves of Nogrod at the end of the First age, the Elves and Dwarves have felt nought but animosity for each other, a feeling which all the long years have done nothing to lessen. The comradeship of Legolas and Gimli became legend as they fought side by side at Helms Deep and journeyed together through the terrible Paths of the Dead.

Gimli
Gimli, and his father Gloin, from the kindom of Dain in the Lonely Mountain, represented the Dwarves of Durin’s house at the Council of Elrond. Gimli was chosen for the Fellowship and travelled south with his companions. Of all the Fellowship only Gimli showed enthusiasm to enter the mines of Moria, which had of old been the great dwarvish city of Kazad-Dum, and the source of the wonderful metal that the Dwarves called Truesilver.

He became greatly enamoured of Galadriel, the Lady of the Golden Wood, and regarded himself ever after as the Champion of this Elven Queen, wearing in a locket around his neck one strand of her hair. He fought valiantly beside his friend Legolas at Helm’s Deep, The Pelennor fields and at the Mrannon Gate.
